Mrs.
Lamson: An Inspiring Recovery Earned
Mrs. Lamson returned from a
vacation not feeling well, but declined seeking medical attention at the first
sign of symptoms. By the time she was admitted to a short-term acute care
hospital, she had developed respiratory insufficiency due to MRSA pneumonia and
needed mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy tube placement. Mrs. Lamson also
developed critical care neuropathy, quadriparesis and metabolic encephalopathy.
Her previous medical history of
severe COPD worsened her condition, and Mrs. Lamson was unable to recover fully
during her stay at the traditional hospital. Her doctors transferred her to
Kindred Hospital Ocala for continued care.
Upon admission to Kindred
Hospital Ocala on July 30, Mrs. Lamson was extremely debilitated, unable to do
anything independently or even move. Kindred’s
interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, specialists and therapists evaluated
Mrs. Lamson and designed a treatment plan tailored to her needs including
ventilator weaning and intensive speech and occupational therapy.
Thankfully, Mrs. Lamson was
determined to recover and threw herself into her therapies. With the Kindred
rehabilitation team’s diligent work, Mrs. Lamson made slow, incremental
progress. She regained her ability to transfer out of bed and perform much of
her upper body self care and the respiratory therapists were able to
successfully wean and decannulate her.
Shortly after she was
decannulated on September 1, Mrs. Lamson discharged to a skilled nursing
facility for continued recovery, breathing on her own and able to eat a normal
diet. Mrs. Lamson was an inspiration to other patients and the staff and she
will be missed, but we are all glad to see her make the recovery she so rightly
earned!
